If you have read the about me on my website here, you know that every quarter I do a free session of a firefighter's family. This quarter I was honored to photograph the "H" family. This family of five ventured out from San Jose, facing commute traffic with 3 kids, 4 and under, to have their session. Even though it seemed like we ran into every obstacle possible, we still managed to have fun and get some great shots! I had a great time hanging out with you guys, thanks for making the trip! And thank you J for serving CoCo county!

What a HOT mama! This morning I went out with L&E to shoot some maternity shots before she has the baby. She is is due literally anytime now. What a beautiful couple these two are and I can only imagine what this baby is going to look like! I had a great time with you two and look forward to meeting the little one!

Hip. that is the word that best describes this couple. This posting has more pictures than normal because I just couldn't leave any out! I spent Sunday afternoon with I & E for their engagement session (which ironically was after the wedding, which I shot on Saturday so stay tuned!) and had a great time getting to know each of their personalities. I absolutely LOVE when I suggest doing something in front of the camera and people are game. This is exactly how I & E were. Anything I suggested, they were up for. They don't take themselves too seriously and I love that! It makes for good photography.

Have you ever met someone and thought, "I could definitely be friends with this person"? That is how I felt as "A" and I emailed back and forth to plan her engagement session while in Napa visiting from Wisconsin. She was getting ready to marry the man of her dreams and asked if I would be a part of capturing this time for them. I was honored to be a part of this and absolutely enjoyed spending the afternoon with A & J. They are the cutest couple and are full of joy and complete adoration for each other. Just for me! I was surprised with a little gift from a friend today and I think it is just the cutest, and SO me! First off, it is pink, my favorite color! And second, well, it's a camera! Oh. My. Goodness! I met the CUTEST little bean yesterday! Little "D" is 9 weeks old and is quite the ladies man. He was flirting with the camera and was really one of the happiest, sweetest little munchkins that I have worked with! Thanks mom and grandma for all the help you guys gave to have little "D"s session go super smoothly. I had a great time with you!

I know I am just a photographer. I am not a wise prophet or a scholar but I am a mom and know when I see potential in someone. Justin is one of those people. He is full of ambition and has big dreams for his future. I know that if he just believes in himself, he will become something great. (And I will be able to say that I took his senior portraits...)

We spent close to three hours shooting (which is a bit longer than normal) and I got to know some of the awesome traits that this kid has. His quiet sarcasm and quick wit kept me laughing throughout the session. Oh, did I mention that he is ridiculously tall? 6'4. And to my 5'3, he seems like a giant.

Thanks Justin for being such a sport and getting me up to date on my slang. (boy do I feel old.)

Finally a boy senior to photograph! Lately I have been bombarded with senior session, most of them being girl sessions, which I love, but I have been anticipating this session with Dan to try some edgier shots. Plus I found a new awesome location in the process!

First of all Dan is crack up. He got a kick out of teasing me pretty much the entire shoot about how I squint my eye when I am shooting. Thanks for giving me a complex buddy. Kidding aside, Dan is a sweet kid who has a creative style and a outgoing personality.

Wednesday I had a photo session with Steve and his two boys. Steve is a volunteer firefighter medic with Rutherford and both of his sons are following in his footsteps. The oldest is with CDF and the youngest is an explorer. Steve is very proud of his boys and it was an honor to meet them all. The shoot was full of jokes and laughing but I think I captured some really great moments that I hope you will treasure. Thank you Steve and the "D's" for serving the community the way you do.

This week I got to hang out with "C" while we took her senior portraits. "C" is such a sweet girl with great style I might add! Lately I've just had the best clients--fun, darling, easy-to-pose, and just generally awesome. "C" definitely fits the bill on all of those points. She was such a sport and even braved a coat and scarf in 90 degree weather! Gotta say I am glad she did because I love the shots!

Meet the "VW" family! I met K at the bootcamp that I go to and once she heard that I was a photographer, she was exstatic to get her family portraits done (since she hadn't had one done since her girls were little!) I absolutely LOVED getting to hang out with K and her family! Her girls are so sweet and even though they are only a year apart in age, they could not be more different!

The oldest is an aspiring fashion designer. Her mom showed me some of her sketches and I will be the first in line to purchase one of her creations in the future. And she is only 11!! Her sister just started taking a knitting class (with my daughter's second grade teacher, is Napa small or what?!) and I literally had to peel the needles out of her hands to get her in front of the camera! Both girls are beautiful both inside and out.

Lauren Class of 2009 | Napa Senior Portrait Photographer

Meet Lauren. She is a sweet, fun-loving girl that has the coolest eyes ever! Check them out, one is blue and the other is brown. It took me about 5 minutes at our first meeting to notice that they were different colors and I literally stopped mid-sentence and said, "wait, are your eyes two different colors?!" Brilliant. You can see my attention to details! She just smiled and said, "I was waiting for you to say something."

I had a really great time with Lauren. We spent a lot of time talking about our shared love of photography as we went from place to place. She is involved with yearbook at her school and was telling me all about their ideas for this years book. It sounds like it is going to be amazing and I can't wait to see it! I really really love engagement photography. I love capturing the fresh love between two people. Sunday D, G and I spent the afternoon entertaining pedestrians, getting a front row seat to a duck "show", took our chances at a firehouse and tromped through a field of prickly weeds to get some really great shots! Ok. This was a first for me. I arrive at D's family photo session having scouted out the locations for their session like I always do. Once I got there and saw how stinkin' cool this family's attire was, and had to totally change my plan! Not only were they so much fun to work with and were up for anything that I had in mind (just the way I like it) but they were sweet as pie! I had such a fun time and could have easily spent a few more hours capturing all the different personalities of the three kids. Andrew, I would LOVE to do your senior portraits next year. Alyssa and David are Engaged!

I have known Alyssa FOREVER and she has always been one of my very favorite people. I have heard so much about her fiance David and finally had the pleasure of meeting him today! He absolutely could not be more perfect for Alyssa! He kept her giggling the whole session and kept telling her he loved her to make her smile. They are just head over heels for each other and I couldn't be happier for Lyss! I wish you two a lifetime of love for each other! Keep God in the center always. Muah!

We just got back from a quick mini-trip to Graeagle CA. We had lot-o-fun hanging out by the pool, riding horses, fishin' and Jordan played a golf tournament with his two favorite "Papaws"! It was such a great week spent enjoying old fashioned fun in the sun!

Wake Up! Wake Up! First Day of School!!

Is it just me, or did summer go by WAY too fast! Last Monday was Jordan and Makenzie's first day of school and they were so excited! You should have seen them the night before carefully laying out their clothes that they were going to wear, loading up their new backpacks and filling their lunch boxes with food for the day. (If only they could be this organized all year!!) Jordan is a BIG 5th grader now and Makenzie is in second grade. My babies are GROWING UP! If any of you have found a way to slow this process, please let me know!

For those of you who are just wanting to get some quick family or child portraits done for gifts and cards, I am offering Christmas Portrait Mini-Sessions!! What is a mini-session? Well, it is like a normal portrait session except in mini form! Sessions are 20-30 minutes (usually 2-3 hours) and you receive 10-15 proofs (instead of the usual 50-75!)

So what's included??
If you book your mini session before Sept. 26th, you will get the mini session that normally retails for $395 for $195!! With your package you will receive 25 press printed holiday cards of your choice and (1) 11x14 print of your choice. (additional prints are available for purchase as well as perfect gift items for your loved ones!) After Sept. 26th the price goes up to $295.

I Know it Sounds Crazy, But...

I know it sounds crazy to start thinking about Christmas when the kids just started school......but I wanted to make you are aware of some Christmas deadlines!

November 10th- Deadline for holiday sessions with orders for Christmas
December 8th- Deadline for all holiday sessions

If you would like to have any of your images for Christmas or Christmas cards press-printed by me (see the Samples section for what I offer below), you must schedule your session before November 10th. If you are only interested in purchasing a digital negative for printing your own Christmas cards, then you must schedule your session before December 8th.

I will not be offering full sessions after December 8th so be sure to plan ahead!

There's nothing as sweet as a newborn baby

Here is a peek into a newborn session that I did on Sunday. Baby "H" was so sweet and well mannered (for a two week old!). I have not had a newborn session go this smooth in a long time! First off, I usually do newborn sessions in the mornings. Babies tend to be less fussy and sleep pretty soundly (which is important because I move them all around!) But this session was in the afternoon and I was pleasantly surprised with how easy going baby "H" was! Makes me what to have another... well maybe not. But he is the sweetest! Thank you to mom and dad for being my lighting assistants! You were such a great help!

A faith story

My sincerest congratulations to Sarah for taking first place in the photogenic catagory of the beauty pageant she was in yesterday. I am so proud of her!! She also took first runner up in talent! Giving back to those who give to us...

When I first started my business, one of the first things on my list was how I was going to give back to the community. My husband is a firefighter with Contra Costa and we suffered a devastating loss just over a year ago when we lost two firefighters from our department, Scott Desmond and Matt Burton. These men have wives and children and their families have endured a tremendous loss that very easily could have been anyone, including my husband.

As I was sitting with other wives at the funeral, images of Scott and Matt flashed across a large screen. Pictures that so vividly displayed who they were... their individual sense of humor, their love for their wives, holding their first born, and several portraits that showed their growing families over the years. That is when I realized that these pictures, these memories, are what would mean the most to me if this circumstance were my own.

It was at that moment that I decided to commit my time and talent to give back to these heroes that put their lives on the line for our community each and every day. We kiss our husbands goodbye and tell them that we love them every day that they go to work and pray that they are safe. But the truth is, the Lord can call us home at anytime. I want other firefighter families to have these moments of their lives captured forever. To always look upon them with joy and hopefully to not look upon with sorrow.

The first family that was chosen to be a part of this are some really great friends of ours. Shane is a Paramedic Firefighter within the same department as my husband. We all met in the academy and have been close ever since. We have watched their family grow from 2 to 4 and have been blessed richly by their friendship. I really love my job!

Being a photographer I get the chance to meet all sorts of people that I wouldn't normally have the opportunity to meet. I know, I know I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again. I LOVE my job. I must have the best job in the world, people tell me that quite a bit and I never argue. A and C came to the Napa Valley from Florida for their 10 year anniversary. We spent a couple hours together and by the end of the shoot, I felt that we were long time friends! Here are a couple of photos to add to the memory book guys!And since their last name is Hart, I thought this was appropriate!

Have you ever met someone in your life that reminds you of, well, you?! I have been a youth leader in our church for about 9 years now and last year Emily was one of the girls in my small group. As I got to really know her, I couldn't help but notice how much she reminded me of me at her age. She is silly but serious. She is sensitive but will stand up for what is right. She is caring and always wants to make sure everyone feels included and happy. Did I mention she has a beautiful voice?! She has got that on me for sure!!

Well Emily just turned 16 so we went out and had a mini session that is to be continued, right Em? But here is a look into the session. Enjoy!

A stroll through the Valley

Sunday evening I spent a couple hours walking though a quite area in the Napa Valley with this beautiful family of four from Petaluma. I have to tell you, it really sounded like a good idea because there were a few areas that were all fairly close in proximity to each other but once we started walking, it suddenly felt like it was 100 degrees out! I guess I didn't notice the heat coming straight from an air conditioned car. We relished the shade along the way and a nice lady that was working at a hotel nearby was observing the shoot took care of us with ice cold lemon water. Melissa's oldest daughter Kylee does Irish dancing and she showed me some of her amazing skills. Look below to see her in action! As always, here is a look into our evening...

Good Mornin' Sunshine!

I am not typically a morning person (just ask my husband!) but since my job revolves around light, sometimes I need to get up early to capture that beautiful morning sun. This was the case this morning when I met up with Jason, Angelica and baby Bella. Bella's dad is a winemaker here in the valley and they live in a vineyard (oh, to be so lucky!) so we thought it would be great to capture Bella in an environment that is so much a part of their family (not to mention the vineyards are absolutely beautiful!) Ok, so I have been drooling over the Canon 5d now for months and after saving and saving, I finally got it (thank you for Canon rebates!) This camera is absolutely AMAZING!! It shoots full frame, it's 12.8 megapixels, 60 large jpg frame burst and has an L series 24-105 IS lens (s0rry for the techie talk, but it's just so exciting!) Stay tuned for upcoming posts... A fun afternoon with Patrice and Myles

Patrice is an amazing woman! She is married, has a handsome 6 year old with tons (and I mean tons!) of energy and in her spare time has managed to graduate from law school and write 4 books! With her new law degree she was in need of some professional headshots so we met up and I think we really got some great ones! She is a very warm and caring person and I felt blessed to be able to spend time with her and her son. This beautiful couple were married today, exactly one year from the date that they met! They were just the cutest couple. So loving and sweet to each other. It was a very small ceremony with just close friends and family but the size of the wedding had nothing to do with how much love these two have for each other. Leonie and her sister Michelle are twins and own Holistic Massage here in Napa. The sisters came to me wanting head shots for marketing purposes but didn't want your typical stuffy headshot with a boring studio background. I loved the idea since my style is anything but stuffy and boring! They claimed that they were not "photogenic" but I don't buy that for a minute! Take a look for yourself...

Sometimes things take time. You can never predict what life is going to throw your way and photoshoots are no exception! The first session that I had with the Johanson family, their sweet son Jake literally came down with the flu as we began our session. The poor little guy was so sick and the rest of the family ended up with it as well. So, of course we rescheduled and tonight we went out and took a second take at our session. Everyone was feeling great and I had so much fun highlighting this family's spunk and love of life! As always, here is a peek into the evening...

I love reconnecting with old friends! One of my closest girlfriends from high school came up to Napa for the weekend to see her little sister graduate from high school. I am still trying to get over the fact that her sister, baby sister, is old enough to graduate! Now that makes me feel old! Anyway, Sarah, her husband Brian and beautiful daughter Kyla live down south and it is very rare that I get to see her. And since Sarah is now expecting another little girl I thought it would be fun to go out and take some maternity pictures. (Really just an excuse to spend more time with my friend!) We were at the beach for a photo shoot with Sarah's Silks on Saturday so we decided to go a little early to let the girls play before it was time to "work". Makenzie, Gillian and Brooke had such a great time chasing the waves and giggling as the water hit their toes. And all us moms had such a great time watching our girls having so much fun!

This weekend I did a photoshoot for Sarah's Silks Fall catalog and had such a great time with the kids. We had a crew of about 6 kids per day and had so much fun dressing them up as mermaids, dragons, princesses and pirates! All of her imaginative play clothing and accesssories are made with such detail and the joy was evident as each child got to dress up. Now I am not a wedding photographer, I do not photograph weddings. I have friends that are amazing at wedding photography, but for me... I photograph kids! But when Keri and Ehren asked me to do their wedding, the draw was Keri's shared passion for children. They had 9 kids in the wedding alone! The love that these two have is so pure and passionate and it was an honor to be at the event. I am really looking forward to photographing their house full of kids in the years to come! Sarah Lane of Sarah Lane Studios may be one of Napa’s newest professional photographers but she’s been interested in capturing images on paper for some time.

“My passion for photography began when I was in high school and took my first developing class,” wrote Lane, now 31.

“I was hooked from that moment on.”

Lane describes her style as photojournalistic.

“I don’t pose people,” said Lane. “I let people do their thing and capture their element. I like to make a portrait to signify who they are.”

“I’m really into details and making each person I photograph feel that they are the most important client I have had.”

This isn’t Lane’s first small business. From 1998 to 2006 she owned and operated Nannies of the Valley, a childcare placement service.

What three people would you most like to have dinner with?

Jesus; my mother’s best friend Nancy who passed away from breast cancer; and my husband, John. We will be married 10 years this Friday.

What job would you like to try/not like to try?

I have always thought it would be fun to be an event planner. Can you imagine planning parties and getting paid? I would not like to be a plumber or a sanitation worker.

I can’t live without:

My grande non-fat decaf upside down caramel macchiato from Starbucks.

Who do you most admire in the business world?

Annie Leibovitz. She is an amazing portrait photographer.

What is one thing you hope to accomplish in your lifetime that you haven’t yet?

I would love to see Europe.

What’s your favorite gift to give?

Once every quarter I give a free photo shoot to a local firefighter and their family. My husband is a firefighter, and these men and women put their lives on the line every day for their community. I want to honor them and their families and bless them with family memories they can treasure for a lifetime.

What’s something people might be surprised to know about you?

I like watching Ultimate Fighting Championship on TV. My favorite fighter is GSP — Georges St. Pierre.

What was your childhood ambition?

To be a Solid Gold Dancer. How embarrassing.

If you could be anywhere right now, where would you be?

On vacation with my family, somewhere tropical and where there are no phones, where we can hang out and be warm.
